What I learned from a year of saying no

I turned down 70% of incoming client work for 12 months. Here's what happened to my income and my sanity.

A year ago, I made a commitment: I would only take on coaching clients who met three criteria — they were genuinely ready to change, they respected my process, and the work felt aligned with my values. Everything else, I said no to.

At first, it was terrifying. My inbox was full of opportunities that paid well but felt draining. I said no to all of them. My income dipped for two months. But then something shifted. The clients I did say yes to were a joy to work with. They showed up, did the work, and got results. They referred others like them. By month four, my income was higher than ever — and I wasn't burned out.

The lesson is simple: your business is defined by what you say no to. Every yes to a client that drains you is a no to the work that lights you up. If you're feeling stuck, try a month of radical filtering. You might be surprised at who shows up.
